Breastfeeding Basics

Breastfeeding Basics training provides didactic and hands-on learning opportunities regarding normal breastfeeding and common challenges with the breastfeeding dyad; utilizing evidenced-based practices that promote successful breastfeeding and client centered services when communicating with breastfeeding families. Application of knowledge learned will be used during the small group activities and case studies regarding common breastfeeding challenges.

This training is consistent with Accreditation Criteria/Management Evaluation (ACME) criteria.

Attendees will be required to participate in this training to receive credit. Attendees are expected to have working cameras/microphones and must participate in group discussions/breakout rooms to receive Certificates of Attendance/Continuing Education.

  • Community Partners such as healthcare providers, hospital, home visiting and childcare professionals

Quiet nursing babies under 6 months are welcome to attend the training. Older nursing children are welcome at nursing times.

Breastfeeding Basics will provide information on the normal course of breastfeeding and an opportunity to develop and practice skills in promotion and support. This training will enhance participant’s comfort level in talking about breastfeeding with families and colleagues. Easy and practical approaches for assisting clients with common breastfeeding challenges will also be included. The participants will use the knowledge and skills gained during this training by returning to their place of employment and their community with greater understanding about why breastfeeding promotion is important. They will be able to confidently identify normal breastfeeding situations and problem solve common challenges.

  • Discuss how personal attitudes and perception impact breastfeeding education.
  • List reasons to breastfeed as well as the risks of not breastfeeding.
  • Identify common myths and misperceptions about breastfeeding
  • Describe normal breast development and changes in relationship to pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Identify ways to support breastfeeding from pregnancy to weaning.
  • List Evidence-based Maternity Care Practices that help promote successful initiation of breastfeeding.
  • Describe how infant’s position and latch can effect breastfeeding success.
  • Identify rapport building techniques that establish a positive relationship with pregnant and breastfeeding clients.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use client-centered services when communicating with or counseling clients.
  • List common issues that arise with breastfeeding as well as strategies clients can use to address them.

In the event that this training reaches the maximum number of registrants prior to the registration deadline, priority will be given in the following order: WIC Staff and Peer Counselors; MIHP Staff, Nurse Family Partnership and Early Headstart; Dietetic Interns; all others. If there is available seating after the registration deadline, registrations will be taken in order of receipt regardless of priority listing. All participants registering in advance will receive a Participant Reminder with the training details.
