H.U.G. Your Baby: The Roadmap to Breastfeeding Success

The H.U.G. (help, understanding, guidance) Your Baby course identifies normal developmental events (from birth to one year) which may be misinterpreted as breastfeeding problems. Utilizing innovative language along with exciting case studies and video clips, participants will gain information, skills and resources to help parents understand their baby and meet their breastfeeding goals.

The H.U.G. Your Baby training is 2-hour online training that can be taken at your own pace.

LESSON FOUR: The Roadmap’s 2-Week, 1-Month

LESSON FIVE: The Roadmap’s Working, 4-month & 6-month

LESSON SIX: The Roadmap’s Nine- and Twelve-Month and HUG Research

LESSON SEVEN: Incorporating Resources into Your Practice

2 L-CERPS (lactation credits) or 2 Contact Hours (nursing credit) are provided by H.U.G. Your Baby, LLC. Once participants complete this online course, they will be able to download their certificate confirming this credit.

A Certificate of Attendance with educational hours will be provided for healthcare professionals who can self-report.

IBCLC CERP Guidance

This training is recommended for (and limited to) Michigan WIC peer counselors. There are no prerequisites required for peers to attend before attending this training.

  • List the benefits of breastfeeding to baby, parent, and community.
  • Understand the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendations for breastfeeding duration.
  • Describe Dr. T Berry Brazelton’s Touchpoints theory and how misunderstanding baby’s behavior can impact breastfeeding success.
  • Describe developmental events impacting breastfeeding: including before and at birth, at two weeks, at one month; when parent returns to work; at four months, six months, nine months, and twelve months.
  • Describe three available resources to enhance parent’s understanding of child development and breastfeeding changes during the first year of life.

Jan Tedder, BSN, FNP, IBCLC, worked for decades providing primary care, lactation support and parent education. She became certified in Dr. T. Berry Brazelton’s Touchpoints program and his Newborn Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). Jan taught nursing students and family physician residents at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University and developed lactation and parenting programs for a number of primary care practices. A published author and well-received international speaker, Jan has shared her HUG Your Baby program both in the USA and around the world, including a year-long International Teaching Tour in 2013-2014.

The H.U.G. Your Baby training is 2-hour online training. One your registration is confirmed by State WIC staff, peers will be provided with an access link and are asked to complete this self-paced training within one month. Currently, there is no fee for this training.
